About the Job

We are seeking a motivated individual to join the Minnesota Center for Prion Research & Outreach for a summer research appointment (June 1 through August 23, 2026). This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in prion diagnostics and molecular biology within a specialized laboratory setting. The primary focus of this role is to assist with testing rodent samples collected from a Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) positive field site for prion seeding activity.

The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training on state-of-the-art diagnostic assays, including RT-QuIC (Real-Time Quaking-Induced Conversion) and nanopore sequencing technologies. This role is designed for early-career researchers who are eager to learn; no prior experience with these specific techniques is required, as full training will be provided.

High school graduation or the equivalent with specialization in sciences and related coursework or experience related to the job totaling at least four years in combination
  • Education: Currently or recently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in biology, molecular biology, or neuroscience.
  • Interest: A strong interest in biology, neuroscience, or infectious disease research.
  • Reliability: Ability to commit to the 3-month duration and work up to 14 hours per week within the Monday-Friday, 9-5 window.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain accurate records in a laboratory setting.
  • Safety Consciousness: Willingness to undergo safety training and adhere strictly to lab safety regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques (e.g., pipetting).
  • Experience working in a research environment.
  • Previous coursework in neuroscience or neurodegenerative disease mechanisms.
  • Proficiency with statistical software (R, SPSS).
  • Experience with longitudinal study design and molecular biology techniques.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $15.25; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
